Geriatric Nursing

In geriatric nursing, students are exposed to nursing for the elderly from diverse socioeconomic, family, and community backgrounds who have a multitude of health conditions. The goals of the courses are to teach the knowledge, methodology and attitudes necessary to provide the elderly with care that encourages recovery and promotes good health so that they can remain functional in daily life.

Professor Keiko Suzuki
I am teaching and researching for geriatric nursing. Japan is known for the longevity of its population; however, as global life expectancy rises, many countries in addition to ours are facing the challenges of an increasing healthy life expectancy. My research involves investigating the types of care or factors involved in promoting good health and autonomy in the elderly. I study residents who live both in the community and those who live in care facilities from the physical, psychological, and social angles.

Lecturer Minaka Nagata
I teach geriatric nursing, and my research involves protecting the rights of the elderly. My main topics of interest are preventing abuse of the elderly. I study nursing professionals who work as elderly-care providers to explore their awareness of abuse, occupational ethics and the work environment. I am also interested in peer support and stress management among patients with chronic diseases.
