  • A physician in ancient Greece.

  • Rejected the belief that diseases were caused by the gods, and was the first to treat illnesses scientifically.

  • "The Hippocratic Oath" (which defined the conduct of physicians and taught medical ethics).

    • Prohibition of euthanasia.
    • The physician's duty of confidentiality.

  • He possessed anatomical knowledge of human organs, and it is believed that certain surgical procedures were already being performed using simple methods of anesthesia.
