This is the report about the 4th World Congress on Alternatives and Animal Use in the Life Sciences held on New Orleans from August 11 to 15, 2002. I introduced the animal numbers and trends used for experiments in Japan. In this congress, I could get the information about the animal numbers and trends in UK, Canada, New Zealand, and US. Therefore I compared these statistics with that of Japan in this report.
The total numbers of animals used in each country were completely different. For instance, 5,626,116 animals were used in Japan, 2,714,726 in UK, 1,746,606 in Canada, 324,395 in New Zealand and about 12,000,000 in US. Almost over 80% of the animals used in experiments were rodents including mice and rats in Japan and UK as well as US. On the other hand, in Canada and New Zealand, rodents were 53% and 32%, respectively. The sum total of dogs, cats, and apes were less than 1% in every country.
Although the total numbers of animals used in UK was decreasing steadily after 1990, the reduction has stopped for few years. It is based on the increase in use of genetically-modified mice. This tendency was the same also in US, Canada, and Japan. In this session, we discussed about the application of 3R to those mice.
In UK, Canada, US, and New Zealand their governments are required by law to survey and report the number of animals used in research, education and testing. However, in Japan no law obliges us to survey and report the number of animals used in experiments.
In order to get the social agreement and the international harmonization to animal experiments, our law or standard should be revised to survey and report the number of animals used in research, education and testing. By such revision, Reduction will be promoted effectively in Japan.
