Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery

Kazuo ISHIKAWA, MD, PhD

A Greeting from the Professor

Otorhinolaryngology-head and neck Surgery deals with a broad region and is deeply concerned with quality of life since it focuses on the critical issues of communication, equilibrium, taste, deglutition, phonation, and head and neck tumors. As a university hospital (terminal hospital) in Akita Prefecture, we cover all different kinds of diseases in these regions. Namely, we deal with surgical treatment, from cochlear implants and acoustic neuroma surgery by the middle cranial fossa approach to tumor removal in conjunction with reconstruction with free tissue transfer. Also laryngeal functional surgery has already been introduced.

Our educational policy involves providing opportunities to develop practical skills to be an ENT specialist, and then to promote the development of certain subspecialties as an ENT specialist. As a rule, residents are encouraged to enter the graduate school of medicine to obtain a doctoral degree. In addition, if one so desires, we provide ample opportunities to perform further research outside Japan. So far our colleagues have worked at the following institutes: Baylor College of Medicine (USA), Pasteur Institute (France), Pittsburgh (USA), and Mt Sinai Hospital (USA) among others. Our department has also accepted many foreign students from abroad such as from China (5), Korea (1), Malaysia (1), Indonesia (1), Thailand (1), Brazil (1), and Egypt(3).
