Department of Orthopedic Surgery

Yoichi SHIMADA, M.D. & Ph.D.

A Greeting from the Professor

Orthopedic surgery – dealing with musculoskeletal diseases including spine and spinal cord diseases, joint diseases, tumors, hand diseases, and trauma – concerns the entire body and is deeply connected to human quality of life. As a terminal hospital in Akita prefecture and the Tohoku area, we handle difficult and dangerous musculoskeletal diseases like severe spinal deformities, spine and spinal cord tumors, revision surgeries of total hip arthoroplasty, and resection and reconstruction of malignant bone and soft tissue tumors. Equipped with the most advanced medical technology in Orthopedic and Rehabilitation fields, we have advanced functional electrical and magnetic stimulation for the restoration of movement to paralyzed patients. In addition, our clinical and basic research in osteoporosis has helped to improve the quality of life in aged patients. Our mission is to provide quality undergraduate and postgraduate education for developing practical skills necessary to become excellent orthopedic surgeons. As a rule of our Department, residents are strongly encouraged to enter the graduate school of medicine to obtain a doctoral degree. In addition, we highly recommend that our students seek further research and clinical training in the USA or Europe.
