Department of Cardiovascular Surgery

Hiroshi YAMAMOTO, MD, PhD

A Greeting from the Professor

Our department has become a major medical center of cardiovascular surgery in Akita Prefecture and has striven to provide exemplary care to our communities since 1998 by Dr Fumio Yamamoto (Professor and Director emeritus). I, Professor Hiroshi Yamamoto, succeeded this department in May, 2014 and am continuing to make efforts for additional achievements in the field of cardiovascular surgery. Nowadays we perform approximately 300 operations a year for patients with ischemic heart disease, valvular heart disease, congenital heart disease, aortic disease, arrhythmia (atrial fibrillation) and peripheral vascular disease. Also, we have a mission to serve people in Akita with emergency cardiovascular surgery as a referral medical center, and we are constantly striving to generate surgical results comparable to those of top class hospitals worldwide. In addition, we place strong emphasis on basic and clinical research for cardiovascular surgery as part of our important mission to provide the community with advanced and safe surgical strategies, which include protection against myocardial, cerebral, or spinal ischemic damage, and infection-resistant graft materials.

Our education programs have advanced training courses designed to cover all possible facets of cardiovascular surgery. Trainees can receive balanced professional instruction on preoperative diagnosis, case presentation, pre-and post-operative patient care, and surgical procedures (adult cardiac surgery, aortic surgery, and peripheral vascular surgery). Also, trainees could take educational opportunities in St. Thomas’ Hospital (UK).
