A Greeting from the Professor

The Department of Metabolism and Endocrinology at Akita University is dedicated to the education of medical and graduate students, and clinical trainees in diabetes, metabolism, and endocrinology. Our research focuses on obesity, diabetes, and diabetic nephropathy. The specific aims include 1) the identification of gene regulatory networks in adipocytes that impact systemic energy metabolism, 2) the identification of novel extra-pancreatic functions of incretin hormones in various organs such as kidney, lung, muscle, adipocyte, and central nervous system and 3) the elucidation of the precise mechanism that underlies the development of diabetic nephropathy. We hope to develop new strategies to control better obesity and diabetic complications and comorbidities, which are critical but remain to be accomplished for the successful treatment of diabetes.
