Rabies and Animal Experiments
- Brain emulsion from dogs infected with rabies (street virus) was inoculated into the brains of animals.
- It was confirmed that monkeys and rabbits developed the disease experimentally.
- By repeated passage through rabbits, the incubation period was shortened to six days (fixed virus).
- The fixed virus was attenuated to produce a vaccine.
- It was confirmed that dogs vaccinated against rabies did not develop the disease even after inoculation with the street virus.
- Since the incubation period in humans is long, it was expected that vaccination would still be effective even after being bitten.
